My Story
At the age of 17, The Flow Arts were literally tossed into Lux’s lap, and with that her life trajectory and eventual flow changed forever. Her boyfriend at the time introduced her to Hula Hooping, but she did not fall in love with it; a lot like the boyfriend! While searching for Hooping lessons she happened upon a 30-second clip of a girl doing Leviwand, and of course, the title of the video was something like “Rave Girl With Dancing Stick”. Which was NOT enough information to figure out what it was, and more importantly, where to get one. A couple of months later Lux, went to her very first festival, jugglers, hoopers, stilt walkers, all everywhere, and some of it was even on fire! Standing and beholding the spectacle, Lux saw a guy doing Leviwand in the distance. She ran to him, out of breath, and asked him to try it. She nailed herself in the face ten seconds later. That was love, the wand had chosen her and the rest is history.
It really is an old magician’s trick, The Dancing Cane. It was first described in 1857 and was invented by Viennese magician J.N. Hofzinser. It is still a popular magician’s trick to this day. You see the likes of David Copperfield and Jeff McBride who have made it popular in recent years. As of 2000’s The Dancing Cane is a much different prop. Think of it more as a juggling prop at this point. Same mechanics, but the style has evolved so much, some of that is thanks to Lux.
Lux took Leviwand and dove deep into the art. She very quickly learned every trick that existed for the prop, then she got bored. She looked around at all of her highly skilled friends and their unique props and thought “ Hey, I bet I can do that with a Leviwand”. So, she started borrowing from Contact Staff, Club Juggling, Baton, and Double Staffs, and like an alchemist, Lux created a style that was very uniquely her, Contact Leviwand. Pushing even further Lux crafted much of the original framework for Contact Leviwand. She took what she learned and started touring the country in 2013. Over the years tons of highly skilled Contact Leviwanders have added to the list of tricks and techniques.
While Contact Leviwand is Lux’s brainchild, she did not want to or had the skills to make leviwands. So she, never knowing a stranger for too long, started working with every prop maker willing to make a Contact Leviwand. She needed increasingly precise leviwands to further the discipline, but more importantly, get them into the hands of as many people as she could so that others could share in the joy and art that is Contact Leviwand. Since, nearly every Leviwand that has come to market has gone through her hands at some point. She helps companies prototype and troubleshoots their builds so that only the best props get her approval.
Now, Lux focuses on teaching through her Youtube Channel and at events around the country. She has gained millions of views through her various platforms, from tutorials, skit videos, and performances, and she shows no sign of slowing down. For Lux, teaching is as rewarding and fulfilling as performing. Every lesson, every performance, is a love letter to the Contact Leviwand, to every person wide-eyed and transfixed, to everyone who believes in magic, and everyone who wants to believe.
As a performer, Lux has found her voice on countless stages including SlipKnot’s Knot Fest, artists Allyson and Alex Grey’s mansion numerous times, and nearly every airport she’s ever been in, or anywhere she sees fit at the moment. She regularly performs around the country doing stage shows for the Flow Arts. Inspiring other artists to try Leviwand, and express themselves in different and fun ways. Lux is a major community leader. She hosts a weekly meet-up, Boston Spin Jam, where people can come to learn how to do Flow Arts. Lux also sits in the director’s chair for The Flow Show Boston and occasionally Flow Art’s festivals across the country, where local artists come to showcase their talents.
When Lux isn’t working to inspire the world with Leviwand she works in marketing. She helps coach flow artists on how to sell their products and events. She also works for a Health IT company to help market and create informative videos for the healthcare industry. Lux gets to sit down and film interviews with CEOs and various executives in healthcare.
Not content just to be good at one particular discipline, Lux has taken the same passion that she has for the Flow Arts, and crafted a unique style and voice as a photographer and videographer. She has an eye and style that are uniquely her. She has shot with musicians, circus artists, fire breathers, and contortionists, to create visually stunning work. Lux is very easy to work with and can make any novice model into a supermodel! She has a way of working with people to put them at ease and get them comfortable in front of the camera, not to mention an unusually high charisma modifier.
